Abstract: The objective of the thesis is to study the potential of complex GRIN optics (CGRIN) that can be produced by structuring matter with a femtosecond laser to address SWAP issues. This work will require the doctoral student to address the challenges of design, manufacturing, and metrology for CGRIN optics.

Project Objectives

The thesis primarily meets LigthInParis' interdisciplinary criteria. Indeed, the PhD student will have to develop skills in both optical instrumentation (typical optical design, optimization strategy, aberration theory, figure-of-merit analysis, modeling etc.) and laser-matter interaction (nano/micro-structuration by means of various laser irradiations, implementation of a laser bench, metrology, study of different materials etc). In addition, the progress of the thesis work will open up opportunities in the inter-sectoral aspect, as the PhD student will be able to benefit from the experience of industrial partners via the FO-RS association. Last but not least, the open-ended work of this thesis will enable FORMIDABLE (under ESCL license) to evolve, from which the European community will benefit, adding an international aspect. Collaborations with Macquarie University in Australia (laser-material interaction) and TU Delft (freeform GRIN) may be considered.

Biographies

Thesis Director Short Bio: Guillaume Druart, graduated from the Institut d'Optique Graduate School (Engineering School in photonics, Paris - France) in 2006. Then he performed a PhD at the Optical Department of the French Aerospace labs and with Charles Fabry laboratory at Institut d'Optique (2009). He is author of more than 33 publications, 76 conference papers and 14 patents. He has supervised or directed 18 theses (4 of them currently in progress). He is currently research director at Onera. His research interests are non conventional optical designs, diffractive optics, multichannel designs, freeform optics, GRIN optics, co-design with image processing to miniaturize cameras or add them advanced imagery functions like spectro imagery or 3D imagery. He is teaching the optical design at Institut d'optique Graduate School for students and for professional training.

3i Co-supervisor Short Bio: M. Lancry is a full Professor at the University of Paris Saclay. He obtains his PhD on 8 December 2004 in Physics of the Lasers, Atoms and Molecules lab (PhLAM). In october 2006, he joined the University of Paris Sud as permanent associated professor. Since 2015, he is group leader of the MAP (Advanced Materials for Photonics) research group. Research and teaching activities of Prof. Lancry are related to a large range from glass elaboration up to the optical communications. This led to international recognition e.g. 7 invited book chapters and 35 invited conferences. His actual interest is the frontier knowledge of silica-based materials manufacturing and their nano/micro-structuration by means of various laser irradiations and this in order to create applications in photonics, polarimetry, optical telecommunication.
